  • Born in 1935 in Baltimore County, Eva Rae Scott was a trailblazer whose passion for education and athletics reshaped opportunities for generations to come. A graduate of Carver High School in Towson, Maryland, Eva developed a deep and unwavering love for sports at a young age, an interest that fueled both her academic and athletic excellence.

At Carver High School, Eva Rae Scott distinguished herself as a varsity letterman in basketball, volleyball, and badminton, demonstrating not only athletic skill, but also discipline, leadership, and determination. Her dedication earned her an academic and basketball scholarship to Morgan State University, a remarkable achievement during a time when opportunities for African American women were severely limited.

In 1958, Eva Rae Scott made history as the first African American teacher at Western High School in Baltimore City, the oldest all girls public high school in the United States. She also broke barriers as the first African American female lifeguard in a Baltimore City public pool. Over the course of forty four years as a physical education educator, she inspired countless students to believe in their potential, both on and off the field.

The Eva Rae Scott Youth Scholarship was created to honor this legacy of courage, access, and excellence. The scholarship provides financial support to marginalized students, enabling them to participate in minor and underrepresented sports such as volleyball, golf, rowing, tennis, and fencing. These opportunities are often unavailable or inaccessible in traditional public school settings.

By expanding access to sports not regularly seen in most public high schools, the Eva Rae Scott Youth Scholarship empowers young people to discover new talents, build confidence, and pursue pathways that reflect Eva Rae Scott’s lifelong belief that every student deserves the chance to learn, compete, and thrive.
